Mānawatia a Matariki!

Kia ora koutou,

Matariki is a natural pause in our calendars. It’s a moment to reflect on where we’ve been, check in on how we’re doing, and think about what’s next. For those of us working in communities, with people and place, it’s also a chance to reconnect with purpose and reset our direction. This short and sweet 3-2-1 is packed with practical insights, inspiration, and useful tools for people and organisations doing good in Aotearoa.

3 Things to Think About This Season

1. What are you carrying that you can now let go of?

Matariki gives us permission to stop doing the things that no longer serve us — meetings that go nowhere, funders that don’t fit, habits that drain our hauora (wellbeing). Is there a process, project, or partnership that needs releasing?

2. How do you honour your people?

Take time to acknowledge the quiet heroes — your volunteers, your board, your team, and your community. Consider a shared meal, a handwritten note, or just a genuine acknowledgement of appreciation. Matariki is about remembering and celebrating people.

Volunteering New Zealand has some fantastic free resources to help you support and recognise your volunteers. Check them out here: www.volunteeringnz.org.nz

3. What story do you want to tell this year?

Use this season to get clear about your direction. What’s your vision? What change are you part of? Whether it’s impact storytelling, strategic planning, or refining your kaupapa (purpose) — now’s a great time to anchor your mahi for the year.
